Poynton Updates and News (PUN): 07/06/13
Higher Poynton Summerfest 2013
Formerly known as the Middlewood Way Open Day, the new, revamped, bigger and better Higher Poynton Summerfest takes place along the Middlewood Way opposite the Boar’s Head pub, and on the Mount Vernon Playing Field between there and the canal, from 11.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday 14th July 2013 – this event is absolutely packed with activities for all the family, including children’s entertainment, free canal boat rides, dog training, birds of prey, pony rides, Morris dancers, town crier, brass band, BBQ, nature trail and a whole lot more. Entry is free, but cars will be charged £2 to park. Watch out for local posters and banners, as well as a flyer in July’s Poynton Post.
Mount Vernon Play Area
The Town Council had a meeting with Cheshire East recently about the removal of a climbing frame from the above play area, for which no notice was given. At that meeting the Town Council was assured that a new replacement climbing frame will be installed. We have asked that this is done before the Higher Poynton Summerfest on Sunday 14th July, which means that it should also be in place in time for the school summer holidays. We will keep residents informed.
One Way Tweets!
The use of the social medium ‘Twitter’ by the Town Council is to inform residents about various events or incidents, but it is not geared up to handle two-way traffic, or to answer queries from residents. If residents do have legitimate concerns or queries they are encouraged to complete and submit the Contact Form on our website. Alternatively please call in at the Civic Hall, attend the monthly Council Surgery (at the Civic Hall at 10am on the first Saturday in the month) or phone T. 01625 872238.
Town Council Records
Residents might like to be aware that the agendas and records (when approved) of all Town Council meetings from May 2012 onwards are posted on the Town Council website here. The records will also now start to appear with a brief summary at the top, listing the main points covered in the meetings. For those without access to a PC hard copies of the agendas and records can also be requested from the Civic Hall reception. Records of meetings prior to May 2012 are also available from the Civic Hall.
Marie Curie Tea Party
Poynton’s Marie Curie fundraising group are holding their first “Blooming Great Tea Party” from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday 9th June at St Martin’s Church Hall, Shrigley Road North, Higher Poynton. Entry is free, cakes and refreshments are available, and organised games for the children. There is also a raffle, so do go along and support a great cause.
Relocation of Bus Stop
Now that the Town Council has secured a bus service that will continue to use the route, it reviewed the location of the bus stop at London Road North , near Poynton Flooring at Fountain Place . The bus shelter there has been removed to allow top dressing of the tarmac in that area, and the bus stop relocated further down London Road North . This will be for a three month trial period until mid-July 2013, after which the siting of the bus stop will be reviewed, and the shelter returned to the chosen location. Please forward your views on this to the Town Clerk - T.01625 872238, Liz.Osborn@poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk

These are valid for bus only, or combinations of bus, train, tram etc. As examples of these, bus only day savers, which can be bought from the driver, cost £5 for travel any day after 9.30am Monday to Friday, or at any time at weekends and Bank Holidays, or £5.60 for travel at any time, any day, including weekends and Bank Holidays. Poynton Business Group
The launch meeting of a new Poynton business group took place in late April at Poynton Civic Hall, hosted by the Town Council. The meeting attracted over 30 business owners and managers from all sectors and from right across the village. This served to highlight the variety of businesses in Poynton and there was a really positive buzz at this first gathering.
Following the success of the first meeting, a second Business Breakfast has been arranged for Wednesday 12th June 2013 at 7.30 a.m. at the Civic Hall.
The meeting is open to all bona fide Poynton business owners and managers, and its core aims will be to promote Poynton as a great place to do business, to encourage more ‘business to business’ contact, and to make it easier for business to operate. For more information, please phone Richard Holland on 01625 872238 or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are also more details on the Business Page of the Council’s website here.
Bed and Breakfast Anyone?
Several Poynton businesses have asked recently if we are aware of any bed and breakfast accommodation in the village or in the immediate surrounding area. Whether it is to enjoy the village shops and restaurants, visit the Anson Museum or to enjoy the countryside, there is growing interest in Poynton's visitor economy.
The Town Council is not aware of any such accommodation, and with the exception of the Travelodge on the Macclesfield Road at Adlington, know of nothing within 1 mile of Poynton. If any residents are aware of approved bed and breakfast accommodation, within walking distance of the village, please let us know.
This could be a business opportunity for someone with some spare room, who is able to become suitably registered, fill a gap in the market and make some money at the same time.
A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road : Phase 2 Consultation
There will be a series of exhibitions to be held on weekdays during this next consultation period – see the schedule below. A Phase 2 consultation leaflet, which will set out feedback from the Phase 1 consultation, details of the preferred scheme and ways to find out more about the proposals, will be distributed to local residents from 3rd June 2013. The dates of the exhibitions will be included within the leaflet. We will also be using press coverage and advertising to raise awareness of the consultation among the local community.

Friday Shopper Service
The Friday Shopper service is run by a small team of volunteer drivers, who collect some of our elderly residents from their homes on a Friday morning, and bring them into the village to do their shopping. They then come to the Civic Hall for a chat, tea, coffee and biscuits before being run home again. If you are interested in using this service, or know someone who is, please contact John Boulton on T. 01625 877902. The Town Council is very supportive of this service and, if the demand exists, would like to see it expanded. Meanwhile the Town Council would like to thank the volunteer drivers, who do a great job, and who give so freely of their time.
A sports-themed community event, to sustain locally the Olympic and Paralympic legacy from last year, is taking place at Poynton’s Leisure Centre off Yew Tree Lane from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday 29th June 2013. If any community groups want to have a presence on the day, and/or run a stall, please contact the Town Council’s Youth Coordinator, Erica Adkins, on T. 01625 872238, e-mail email@example.com
Garden Safari 2013

We are looking for approximately ten gardens in Poynton/Higher Poynton, which gives people the opportunity to visit them all during the course of one day.
For details of Ranger events please call T. 01625 383700 or go to the Rangers website www.cheshireeast.gov.uk/leisure,_culture_and_tourism/ranger_service/ranger_events.aspx. For those residents without access to a PC, printed copies of the monthly Ranger programmes can be had on request from the Civic Hall.
Poynton Home Services Scheme
Your Town Council, in partnership with Peaks and Plains Housing Trust, offers a range of fixed cost home services for all of our residents, provided by reliable local contractors and monitored by ourselves and Peaks and Plains. We work with contractors who offer the following services: gardening, decorating, maintenance, cleaning, electrical, joinery, home computer tuition and home modifications for disabled or elderly residents. Any Poynton resident in need of these services, or a local contractor who could offer these or different services, are asked to contact Erica Adkins, Acting Home Services Coordinator on 01625 872238 or e-mail her on email@example.com to find out more. There's also some information here on the Council's website.
Parking on Park Lane
Instances of illegal parking on Park Lane are getting less frequent, but still happen. There is a complete parking ban on Park Lane, with the only exceptions being parking on private forecourts and behind individual shops (with the owner’s/tenant’s permission) and loading/unloading in the designated bays (outlined by studs in the carriageway), but not at peak times between 8am and 10am, and 4pm and 6pm – retailers are asked to ensure that their suppliers are made aware of this.
Penalties are being issued for those who disregard the ban. Parking behind the Co-op on Park Lane is unrestricted between 7pm and midnight daily. Daytime restrictions, limiting parking to one and a half hours, remain, and will be enforced by the Co-op. Meanwhile there is extensive free parking at the Civic Centre Car Park.
The Poynton Update and News (PUN)
A reminder that hard copies of this PUN are available on request from the Civic Hall for those of our residents without access to PCs – please spread the word! A version of the PUN is published in ‘SK Poynton’ magazine, and the Trading Post café on the canal towpath at Nelson Pit in Higher Poynton also displays it. There are plans as well to post a condensed version of the PUN on the Town Council notice boards around the village.
