First World War Commemoration – Volunteer needed!

Poynton War MemorialThe Town Council has established a budget to help underpin community events this year in commemoration of the start of the First World War. Discussions will be taking place with local schools, churches, the British Legion and the Poynton Local History Society, as well as other interested parties.

Meanwhile the Town Council would like to hear from anyone in the community interested in co-ordinating the various commemorative events. Please contact the Town Clerk on T. 01625 872238, Liz.Osborn@poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk

Help at the 2014 Summerfest

The Poynton Summerfest photoThe launch meeting was held recently for the 2014 event, taking place from 11.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday 13th July. It promises to be every bit as good as last year’s, with much interest already being shown by local stallholders, live bands and other interested parties.

The small group of volunteers who organise this community event would be really grateful for a team of volunteers to help on the day itself – free Summerfest T shirts are on offer! . If you are interested please contact Pat Clay on T. 01625 878495.

Community Transport Funding

Cheshire East Council has made funds available to create and promote community transport schemes in its towns and villages. The Town Council has submitted a comprehensive business case to create a Shopmobility scheme in Poynton, and to procure two ex-Cheshire East minibuses and associated funding to operate them, for the benefit local groups and voluntary organisations. They will also be used to provide transport to bring our elderly residents to social and other community events. We hope our bids will be successful, and we will keep residents informed. Meanwhile the Town Council would like to thank those many organisations and individuals who wrote in support of these schemes.

Inclined to help?

Poynton Inclines photoAs well as protecting the woodland on the two Inclines, the Town Council is keen to increase their usage through improving the footpaths and signage etc.

Volunteers are being sought to form ’Inclines Ground Force’, a team to help clear footpaths and tidy debris as well as learn a bit more about the Inclines’ nature and history.

The first Inclines Ground Force event is booked for Saturday morning 8th March, from 10am to 1pm. If you are interested in getting involved, meet at the bottom of Lady’s Incline – suitably attired!

Some tools will be provided, but feel free to bring any useful tools of your own. For further information contact Richard Holland on 01625 872238 or e-mail reception@poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk

Poynton In Business - Meeting

Poynton in Business LogoThere was a breakfast meeting, at the Civic Hall on Wednesday 12th March at 7.30am.

For more information about the business meeting please contact Richard Holland on 01625 872238 or at reception@poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk or go to the Business Page of the Council’s website.

Annual Community Litter Pick

This will take place on the last Saturday in March – Saturday 29th March. You are asked to collect at the Civic Hall from 9.30am, for a 10am start. Bin bags, litter picks and gloves will be on hand, and hot and cold drinks and biscuits will be available throughout at the Civic Hall. Please give whatever time you can to help keep the village tidy.

Merger of Civic Hall and Library Buildings

Civic Hall and Information Centre PhotoLate last year the Town Council approved a Cheshire East project whereby the existing entrances to the Civic Hall and Library will be closed, and a new entrance and reception area built, serving both the Civic Hall and the Library.

The plans also include public toilets accessible from the reception area. The opportunity is also being taken to reconfigure and modernise the Civic Hall layout, with a new suite of meeting rooms and separate staff area being created. The Civic Hall roof will also be refurbished.

Planning permission has now been granted, and work is due to start in May. This will inevitably cause some disruption to those who use the Civic Hall and Library, and every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum. We will keep residents informed of progress.

A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road

The main contractor for this road scheme, Carillion Morgan Sindall (CMS), are carrying out ground investigation works for around 6 weeks, having started on Wednesday 19th February 2014. This involves some 250 trial pits/trenches or boreholes along the length of the scheme. Letters have been sent to the 20 or so landowners affected. For more information contact the CMS Engineering Manager, John England, T. 0161 9278220, e-mail john.a.england@carillionplc.com

Community Comfort Scheme

With the demise of the automatic toilet next to the Post Office the Town Council has been encouraging various businesses to open up their toilet facilities to members of the public, under a ‘Community Comfort’ scheme. Special thanks go to the Farmer’s Arms, Co-op Independent Living and Poynton Osteopathic Clinic (on Park Lane, next to Waitrose) for being the first to sign up to this.

The Town Council would welcome other businesses who have suitable facilities coming forward too. Meanwhile residents will be pleased to learn that plans for the new entrance and reception area to serve both the Civic Hall and the Library include public toilets. These facilities should be ready in late summer/autumn this year.

Poynton Springboard – Music For All

Musical Notes DrawingDiscussions are well advanced for a music festival to be held at a range of venues across Poynton next year, over the weekend of Friday evening 26th September to Sunday 28th September 2014.

This will be a community event with many different types of music to suit all tastes and ages. Please make a note of this weekend in your calendars and diaries.

Dog Fouling

The Town Council continues to receive complaints about dog fouling. If residents become aware of repeat offenders, with the fouling taking place at fairly regular times at the same location and which the owners do not clear up, please contact the Community Dog Warden on T.0300 123 5021, e-mail info@cheshireeast.gov.uk and/or let the Town Council know (T. 01625 872238), who will then inform the PCSOs.

Time Out Café

There are many older members of our community who are isolated, spend days without seeing or speaking to anyone, and who are not confident to venture out alone. Time out Café is a new Town Council initiative and is now open most Fridays between 2pm and 4pm at Poynton Civic Hall. Do come along and join us, you will be guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome, refreshments and a chat. Meet up with friends, access information on local services, organisations and groups, and have your say on how this community facility could develop further, and what social or creative events we could host in the future. For further information please e-mail trish.hill@poyntontowncouncil.gov.uk or call her on T. 01625 872238.
