Cllr Sarah-Jane Gilmore's Mayor's Report - February 2019

12th December 2018, Worth School Pantomime

There’s nothing like a good Pantomime to bring some Christmas cheer and Worth Primary School did that brilliantly with their performance of Cinderella.

All the children aged 4-11 played a part and they did it fabulously; singing, dancing and acting.

Well done to all of them, and to the parents & teachers who make it happen!

14th December 2018, Friday Lunch Club

I had a lovely time at the Friday Lunch Club Christmas Party!

Everyone was in fine festive form as we sang along to a great range of seasonal songs courtesy of Hullabaloo who were very entertaining as always.

14th December 2018, Handpicked by Henrietta Prize Draw

Great fun drawing the winners of the Giant Jellycat Bunny Raffle.

The proceeds will be divided between The Thomas Theyer Foundation & Ollie's Army Battling Against Battens Battens, both very worthy causes.

15th December 2018, Poynton Male Voice Choir

Poynton Male Voice Choir and The Smithy Belles performed a charity concert at Poynton Methodist Church. Poynton Male Voice Choir, directed by Eileen Rigg were, as always, brilliant! I especially love to hear them sing Silent Night. The Smithy Belles were fantastic! The event raised funds for The Ticker Club - an association of ex-patients who have undergone some form of open-heart surgery or other cardiac procedures at Wythenshawe Hospital, home to one of the country’s leading cardiac centres.

The Club, founded in 1987, offers support throughout the North West to those who are themselves experiencing heart or vascular problems, and to their families.

17th December 2018, Poynton Dementia Steering Group

As part of my role I have been pleased to meet with local businesses to learn how they are supporting Poynton to become a Dementia Friendly Community. A focus for Poynton Dementia Steering Group is to encourage local businesses to be more aware of the needs of people living with dementia and their carers.

Waitrose – Poynton branch, have committed to support this initiative through being recognised by Poynton Dementia Steering Group as ‘working to become dementia friendly’. A number of staff at the branch are Dementia Champions and are supporting colleagues to become Dementia Friends. In addition, they have delivered Dementia Friends awareness sessions to pupils at Poynton High School as part of their student development days. In the new year, Waitrose Dementia Champions have committed to supporting Poynton’s primary schools with Dementia Friends awareness sessions.

17th December 2018, Poynton Walking Netball

I was delighted to be invited to Poynton's Walking Netball Group Christmas get together - they are a lovely group of ladies who meet weekly at Poynton Leisure Centre.

The sessions are coached by Everybody Volunteers and Sports Coaches and cost £3 or free as an Everybody member; and run every Tuesday at Poynton 11-12 followed by tea & coffee!

19th December 2018, Poynton Golden Memories

I have never seen so many festive jumpers as I did at Poynton Golden Memories Group Christmas Party! So lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves - well done to Judy, Edith, Gerald and all the wonderful volunteers for their hard work at every event the group holds!

21st December 2018, Poynton High School

Poynton High School Christmas Assembly was a fabulous event. A lovely celebration of the pupils' achievements in the term. It was great to listen to the children singing, playing instruments, presenting poems and readings; and not forgetting the Concert and Jazz Bands.

I was delighted to help present certificates for house achievements. Well done to all and thank you to Headteacher David Waugh, for his kind invitation.

24th December 2018, St George's Church Crib Services

My husband Chris and I had the honour of being Joseph and Mary in the 3 Crib Services at St George’s Church on Christmas Eve.

It was lovely to see the Church so packed for all three services; and to see all the children dressed as Angels, Shepherds and Wise Men!

12th January 2019, Woodlands Care Home, Mrs Mary Beck 100th Birthday

I feel incredibly honoured to have been invited to Mary Beck's birthday celebration. Mary lives at Woodlands Care Home in Poynton, and on Thursday 10th January she turned 100 years young! Her family and the staff at Woodlands arranged the celebration to enable all of Mary’s friends and family to get together to celebrate with her.

It was lovely to meet Mary and her family; and to read extracts from her memoirs - she’s had a very busy life and travelled far and wide in her role with the WRAF. She’s an active member of St Philip's Church, Alderley Edge, and recently provided the reading for the service via video! What a lady!

Happy Birthday Mary from all the staff and Councillors at Poynton Town Council!

16th January 2019, Poynton Mobility Matters

Sharon Duke (PTC Communities Co-ordinator) and I really enjoyed meeting with Poynton Mobility Matters. They are a group of residents with various mobility problems who meet regularly to share concerns about mobility and accessibility around the town.

They have a lot of practical ideas to address current issues and we look forward to working with the group to try and help them progress their suggestions!

16th January 2019, Lostock Hall PTA

It was great to meet members of Lostock Hall Parent Teacher Association and an opportunity for me to share my fundraising progress, and the events that are planned; and for Sharon (PTC Communities Co-Ordinator) to share ideas and information.

I’m proud to be working with such a lovely group of hard-working volunteers and I look forward to supporting their events and raising money to help fund a Daily Mike Track for the school!

21st January 2019, Waitrose Community Matters

I was very happy to help Waitrose Poynton promote the Community Matters token scheme as it supported three very worthy local causes in January:

  • Poynton Men in Sheds
  • The Twinning Association of Poynton
  • The Centre

25th January 2018, Poynton Rambling Club

I had a lovely evening with the Poynton Rambling Club. They are an independent walking club, established in 1969 and based in Poynton. They walk mainly in the East Cheshire & Peak District areas. On January 25th, they held a dinner dance to celebrate their 50th birthday. I felt very honoured to be invited to attend.

In 1969 they charged an annual membership fee of 25p - in 2019 it’s just £5! For that there is an organised walk of 8-12 miles every Sunday. On Wednesdays, most walks are 5-10 miles, with the shorter, easier walks usually followed by an optional lunch in a nearby pub. There are also evening walks organised on alternate Mondays & Thursdays from May to August.

Around twice a year, they also organise residential weekends or mid-week trips for walking in other parts of the UK and during the winter months they have other social events in the local area.

7th February 2019, Poynton Library Harry Potter Book Night

I had a magical time at Poynton Library #HarryPotterBookNight - another fabulous event run by our amazing Library team!

We had a reading, the sorting hat put us into teams for the quiz, there was a hunt for magical objects and a word search!

The library team and the children were all in fabulous Harry Potter attire and a great time was had by all!

7th February 2019, Action on Hearing Loss Open Mic Event

Great Open Mic event by Action on Hearing Loss, the largest charity for people with hearing loss in the UK. The Charity raises funds to support research to help develop potential treatments for tinnitus and, ultimately, cures. Just as importantly they help raise awareness of how to protect hearing.

Sharon Duke, PTC Communities Co-Ordinator has been working with Ali Winter from the charity to provide workshops with our community & schools.

The music was courtesy of Quiet Houses, Glass Unicorn and Tom Hingley and shows music doesn’t have to be loud to be enjoyed! Sarah-Jane Gilmore - Poynton Town Mayor's Report Photo - Action on Hearing Loss Open Mic Event
