20th March 2018, Poynton Pick & Tidy, Civic Hall, Poynton

Jasper, Daniel and Oliver from Poynton High School have been volunteering for Poynton Town Council since the end of October.

As part of their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, the students have been clearing litter from different areas in Poynton for an hour each week, for a six-month period.

A regular focus has been around the Barnaby Park area and Deva Fields which have been problematic and have required them to re-visit on a number of occasions.

I really enjoyed chatting to them about the Award scheme and the work they’ve put in litter picking!

22nd March 2018, Open Hands Fashion Show, Royal British Legion, Poynton

Fantastic night at the Fashion Show to raise funds for Open Hands!

Open Hands is a friendly local charity, based in Poynton. Their primary role is to help vulnerable people who would otherwise find it difficult to use public transport to get them to appointments, etc. Open Hands arranges transport to clinics, dentists, doctors, hospital appointments and visiting for the elderly and disabled. They are a not-for-profit organisation and operates ‘simply because we care’. Their team of willing volunteers generously give their time to help to make the lives of those in need a little easier.

Well done to Adelle and SOS Bramhall who raised a total of £846!

23rd March 2018, The Hub, Hockley Centre, Poynton

The Hub, a fantastic place for youngsters to hang out!

Made possible by Poynton Christian Fellowship and the fantastic group of volunteers who work so hard!

Really interesting to visit and see how they organise the night so that there’s something for everyone!

Looking forward to supporting the team however I can in the future!

24th March 2018, Mayor of Knutsfords Charity Ball, The Courthouse, Knutsford

Fabulous evening at The Mayor of Knutsfords Charity Ball, raising money for his charities Mid Cheshire Riding for the Disabled, Knutsford Youth Orchestra & Knutsford Friendship Cafe!

The total raised on the night was just over £7,400.

25th March 2018, Poynton Runners at Poynton 10K, Poynton

Lovely to meet members of Poynton Runners as they limbered up for the Poynton 10k! Poynton Runners are a 'Running Community' free to all levels of runners no matter of age or speed. They have held four 'Couch to 5k' programs over the last 18 months helping non-Runners to be able to complete 5k by following the NHS plan over 9 weeks. Kevin (one of the groups organisers) estimates 60-80 Runners (age range from 16 to 72) have completed the plan, many of which still run with them on a regular basis.

At the other end of the spectrum they have people who come along as part of their marathon, ultra's and iron distance triathlon training plans! They also hold social events each year providing funds for local causes including Poynton 24H AED Group!

26th March 2018, Poynton Golden Memories, The Centre, Poynton

It was an honour and a pleasure to judge the Easter Bonnets/Boaters at Poynton Golden Memories! Oh boy was it difficult though! So many fabulous creations!

Congratulations to the winner Joan!

As always it was lovely to see Judy, Edith, Gerald and their wonderful group of volunteers and members.

26th March 2018, Easter Bunny Trail, Glastonbury Drive Play Area, Poynton

Brilliant event! Great to see so many families enjoying the Easter Bunny Trail and Glastonbury Drive Play Area! A HUGE well done to the Committee who continue to work so hard! They raised a total of £329!

3rd April 2018, Poynton Live, Poynton

Brilliant chat with the team from Poynton Live: the home of live music in Poynton!

Helping event organisers to attract audiences, whilst enabling potential audience members to find out what’s on in the village, Poynton Live is a free-to-use website that promotes live music and theatrical events. In addition, Poynton Live has its own dedicated Twitter feed and Facebook page.

Created by Poynton people and for Poynton people, it is the brainchild of Councillor Geoff King, musician Les Renshaw and website guru Mike Gallagher. An entirely, not-for-profit website, it was created in late in 2014 following on from the Springboard Music festival which raised over £2500 for the National Eczema Society and has now become well-established as a useful and valued resource.

Poynton today is a lively and buzzing village with many bars, cafes, restaurants and venues, and Poynton Live is helping local groups and businesses to increase both awareness and footfall whilst giving customers the opportunity to discover events they might not otherwise have heard of.

For Geoff, Les and Mike, this has opened the door to other exciting initiatives, and they are currently expanding the reach of Poynton Live to nearby communities whilst planning a new initiative that will see the introduction of a new communications resource for local businesses and people.

7th April 2018, Poynton Pick & Tidy, Poynton

Great morning with Poynton Pick & Tidy! It’s incredible what you find!

7th April 2018, Incredible Edible Poynton, Poynton

Really exciting meeting with members of Incredible Edible Poynton! So many ideas to be put into action!

7th April 2018, The Waterloo Pipes & Drums, Royal British Legion, Poynton

What a treat to attend The Waterloo Pipes & Drums practice session!

The bagpipes are works of art! Played by Gavin & Stevie, with Tim on the drum to get your feet tapping!

14th April 2018, Opening the Heritage Garden, Poynton

It was an honour to assist Theo Eaves, one of Poynton's distinguished war veterans, as he officially opened the Heritage Garden!

The Heritage Garden is the result of many months of fund raising and hard work by a small group of volunteers, and occupies the previously barren space between Priorslegh Medical Practice and the Library. It comprises a central raised bed, with a traditional lamp post, and elsewhere on the site seven memorial benches, five large planters, two half size planters, an insect house, bird box and a number of wall-mounted silhouettes that celebrate Poynton's rich heritage.

Steps inset in the sides of the raised bed are there to help younger gardeners access it for their own planting. Work is continuing to procure a centre piece for the plinth in the raised bed.

All those groups and organisations who kindly helped fund the Garden will be recognised on a permanent plaque.

Today was an opportunity to celebrate the successful transformation of what was a little used and sterile public area into a colourful and tranquil space for all to enjoy.

The local volunteers responsible for this project, include representatives from Poynton Rotary, Poynton In Bloom, Projects 4 Poynton, Poynton Town Council and Poynton Library.

Well done to everyone!

14th April 2018, Mayor of Middlewich Charity Ball, Middlewich

Great evening at the Mayor of Middlewich’s Ball! Well done to Cllr Samantha Moss for raising just over £3000 for her charities.

15th April 2018, Higher Poynton Tennis Club, Higher Poynton

Higher Poynton Tennis Club really is a hidden gem! Fabulous courts, a lovely club pavilion and a group of incredibly friendly people!

It was such a treat to visit and meet some of the members on their open day. Club member Elaine explained how the club is ‘passionate about bringing tennis to those of us who don’t think we are very good but would love to “have a go”. Perhaps for some of our members the last time they picked up a racquet was when they were at school. That doesn’t matter to us. It’s about fun, friendship and community. We are also keen to welcome Mums & Dads to bring the family and have good old-fashioned family fun.’

Did you know that Higher Poynton has had its own dedicated tennis club for over 90 years? Higher Poynton Tennis Club started life as Green Lane Tennis Club in 1925 but was renamed in 2015 to make its location more self-explanatory, and to reflect that access to the club had changed from being on Green Lane to being on Carleton Road - entrance next to No.13 on Carleton Road.

A hidden gem with a wealth of history! They even have a small vegetable plot, where they have reused the umpire's chair as a runner bean frame!

15th April 2018, Coppice Road Allotments, Poynton

Phil Swift, Chairman of the Coppice Road Allotment Association kindly invited me to visit Coppice Road Allotments to see the daffodils. He said they were rather lovely and he wasn’t wrong - they’re spectacular!

Phil also gave me a tour of the Allotments. They are clearly very well looked after! Great to chat to some allotment holders who were busy digging & planting!

26th April 2018, Worth School Garden Opening, Worth School, Poynton

It's always a pleasure to visit Worth School, and I had the honour of opening their new school garden!

Their PTA, parent helpers and governors have worked hard to raise money to build the children a new garden and buy a new shed and tools.

Their aim is to grow fruits and vegetables as well as flowers so that the children can actually cook with and eat what they grow.

It was fabulous to hear from the children about all the fruit and vegetables they are looking forward to growing! I look forward to updates!

28th April 2018, The Mayors Posh Party, Poynton Royal British Legion, Poynton

What a fantastic night we had at The Posh Party! Fabulous music courtesy of DJ Mark Ashton, great food from Crossleys Bakery and superb raffle prizes from Turners Garden Services, Ubagene and Vinehop! And thank you to Poynton Brewery for laying on The Mayors Chain Beer!

AND we raised a whopping £791.31 bringing my grand total to £4000.31!

Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who made this, and my previous events, so successful!

The money will go a long way to help Living Well & Poynton Golden Memories continue to provide their invaluable services!

29th April 2018, Mayor of Cheshire East Sunday Lunch, Swettenham Arms

Sunday lunch with The Worshipful Mayor of Cheshire East, Councillor Arthur Moran, in aid of the Mayors charities.

29th April 2018, Girlguiding World Centre Thinking Day, Tytherington High School

Thank you to Girlguiding Middlewood Division for their invitation to their World Centre Thinking Day. World Centre Thinking Day is celebrated annually by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. It’s a day when they think about their counterparts in all the countries of the world, the meaning of Guiding, and its global impact.

Today there were 5 Zones all based on one of the 5 Girlguiding World centres India, Mexico, Africa, Switzerland and England. I really enjoyed drumming in Africa!

5th May 2018, Poynton Pick & Tidy, Poynton

What a great morning! Poynton Pick and Tidy Getting Drastic on Plastic in partnership with Ansa!

Thank you to Lisa from Ansa who has provided advice on plastic reduction, recycling, reducing food waste and composting.

And a massive thank you to Jamie Hargreaves, a student Poynton High School, who has creatively constructed an impressive and large Up-cycled sculpture of ‘The Vulcan’, to accompany the Get Drastic on Plastic display at the Civic Hall. The Vulcan will be back on display if you are passing by, why not drop in to see the display.

The Acoustic Lounge Team are supporting reducing plastic waste by going straw less, and The Cask are using compostable draws!

5th May 2018, Poynton Market, The Centre, Poynton

Great time at Poynton Market! A lovely range of crafts - some very clever people! There are a further two events planned – its good to see this type of event back in Poynton.

8th May 2018, Walking Netball, Poynton Leisure Centre

Great fun meeting Poyntons Walking Netball Group! Liz Arrowsmith was inspired by an advert for Walking Netball, and through talking to Sharon Duke, PTC Communities Co-ordinator and Poynton Leisure Centre the group was launched!

The weekly Walking Netball sessions start off with some basic warm-up exercises followed by shooting practice and team games. I joined in the stretching exercises at the end! The sessions are coached by Everybody Volunteers and Sports Coaches and cost £3 or free as an Everybody member; and run every Tuesday at Poynton 11-12 followed by tea & coffee.

Liz says “it’s a great way of getting some exercise with lots of fun, laughter and camaraderie. Most of us played netball at school, but this session is a much slower pace and perfect for anyone looking to get more active, at any age and ability."

It’s certainly caught on as there are now sessions at Congleton Leisure Centre every Thursday 10.30-11.30am & Wilmslow Leisure Centre every Wednesday 10.30-11.30am as well! As part of National Walking Month in May Everybody Sport and Recreation is offering a range of FREE introductory taster sessions for anyone looking to get more active and join a local walking activity group.

Update on Mayor's Fundraising

Following the Mayors Posh Party I have now raised a grand total of £4,070. The Just Giving Page (https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/sarah-jane-gilmore) will close on Sunday 13th May 2018.

The first £1500 I have raised will go to Living Well; the balance will be split between Living Well & Poynton Golden Memories. I know the funds will help both groups to continue to deliver their invaluable services to our community.
